The 8th International Symposium ‘W(est)-E(ast) Identity in Space of Metaculture’ took place in St. Petersburg, Russia, on May 24, 2025 at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Symposium was co-organised by The UNESCO Chair on Comparative Studies of Spiritual Traditions, their Specific Cultures, and Interreligious Dialogue, along with the Sociological Institute Chair of Russian Philosophy and Culture, at the State University of St. Petersburg in Russia, the Kyongbuk National University in South Korea and the Institute of Philosophy in Mongolia.

The Symposium discussed various aspects of Eastern cultures and spiritualities, with a focus on China, Japan and Mongolia, and included a diverse range of papers on topics including:

  • ‘Metaculture: New Outlooks of Identification Practices’ (Professor Anatolii Alekseev-Apraksin, State University of St. Petersburg)
  • ‘Philosophical Anxieties related to Virtual body: Constructing Identity and Cultural Security’ (Dr. Geng Biao, University of Southern China),
  • ‘Specifics of Coexistence of Tengrianism and Buddhism in Worldview of Mongolian People’ (Dr. Gantuiaa Magzarjav, Institute of Philosophy, Mongolian Academy of Sciences).
  • ‘Kalmyk People:  Identification Transfer in Space of Metaculture’ (Dr. Valerii Badmayev, Southern Scientific Centre, Russian Academy of Sciences)

The 7th International Symposium ‘W(est)-E(ast) Identity in Space of Metaculture’ was held in November 2023.
