The UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Competences hosted by Stellenbosch University is pleased to announce its next monthly Webinar on Medicinal Plants of South Africa on 10 September 2025, 15:00 Central African Time (CAT).
Presented by Prof Nokwanda P. Makunga
Department of Botany and Zoology, Stellenbosch University
Group leader – Medicinal plant biology / Medicinal plant research
This webinar on medicinal plants of South Africa will explore South Africa’s incredible floral heritage that is characterised by high levels of species richness and endemism. Many of these plants are exploited locally as traditional medicines. The diverse ethno-cultural utilisation is thus encouraging entry of new products into global markets. There are unique opportunities using biotechnologies to study medicinal plants in South Africa. Using specific examples from medicinal plants in the greater Cape Floristic Region, studies illustrate opportunities for commercialisation and conservation. These studies illustrate the exciting potential of medicinal plant biodiversity in South Africa.
