The UNESCO Chair “Memory, Cultures and Interculturalism” and the Higher Institute of Practice and Development of Law (ILPD) is hosting an International Conference on the topic of “Examining strategies for the prevention and elimination of the crime of genocide and their implementation”.
The conference aims to contribute to a proper understanding and better visibility of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and to become an annual meeting for reflection, analysis, and concrete proposals on strategies for the prevention and repression of the crime of genocide and/or other crimes against humanity.
The conference will cover:
- international strategies for the prevention of the crime of genocide, with an emphasis on United Nations strategies
- international strategies for the repression (punitive) of the crime of genocide
- other strategies employed for managing the consequences of the crime of genocide, including, among others, the issue of memory laws and the posthumous recognition of certain crimes of genocide.
The conference is open to researchers, law and political science students in Rwanda and the Great Lakes Region, legal and justice professionals and students, trainee magistrates, trainee lawyers and candidates for administrative competitions, local elected officials and heads of local authorities, media associations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other civil society actors.
